2026 Spring Releases
The winter season of anime was incredibly jam packed with a ton of amazing series, I mean, we got tons of heavy hitters like Frieren Season 2, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, Hell's Paradise Season 2 at the same time. Truly a dream come true. But unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, so as we say goodbye to winter of 2026, wipe your tears and look ahead on a bright future. As the spring season of anime dawns upon us, I'd like to share my thoughts on the new releases and what I'm particularly excited for.
At first glance, many big names are releasing with exciting new season's such as Re:ZERO Season 4, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4, and Doctor Stone Season 4 Part 3. All of which are well known to most long-time anime fans, and I for one am most excited for the new season of Re:Zero. If you are rather new to anime I'd definitely recommend adding these series to your watchlist. But for all my fellow anime fans that are wanting a small break from the mainstream, here are some of the new releases that have sparked my interest.
Liar Game
Kickstarting the list is Liar Game. The Liar Game anime is adapting from the manga by Shinobu Kaitani, a reasonably older manga with publication that spanned ten years and 19 volumes since it's initial release in 2005. It is a highly successful manga that received live action adaptations in Japan and Korea, with it's dark, high-stakes, psychological battle concepts also being cited as a key influence on the international hit Squid Game. Undoubtedly, Liar Game has garnered much success over the years, it's a wonder why it took this long to get an anime adaptation.
The story follows the main character Nao Kanzaki, a naive and honest-to-a-fault college girl who is forced into the this high-stakes competition, the Liar Game. It is a competition where individuals must deceive and betray others to win massive amounts of money, and to lose in the Liar Game means falling into immense debt. With the help of Shinichi Akiyama, a con artist and former psychology professor, she hopes to survive debt and conquer the Liar Game.
Liar Game provokes the question: can honesty prevail over greed. If you are a massive fan of suspenseful, high-stake psychological thrillers, or if you like series like Kakegurui, Squid Games, or Alice in Borderland, then keep a watchful eye on Liar Game.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm
Introducing Daemons of the Shadow Realm, an adaptation of the manga by Hiromu Arakawa, who is also the author of Fullmetal Alchemist. Now, everybody knows how hugely successful Fullmetal Alchemist is, as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood reigned as the number one anime of all time for over a decade. Much like Fullmetal Alchemist, it is being animated by studio Bones, an animation studio which has also brought us successful anime such as My Hero Academia and Soul Eater. Unsurprisingly, with such a reputable author and studio behind the anime, the hype and expectations for Daemons of the Shadow Realm is extremely high.
On the surface, Daemons of the Shadow Realm utilises many medieval fantasy elements, which is much different in comparison to Hiromu Arakawa's world within Fullmetal Alchemist. Hiromu Arakawa's Daemons of the Shadow Realm crafts a fateful story of two twins, as it pieces together supernatural themes, a unique power system, and a whole lot of action. As visible in the trailer we see Yuru, one of these fateful twins, having difficulty adjusting to his new life. After living an undisturbed life in a rather remote village, his life is suddenly thrown into disarray. As one of the children who 'sunders day and night' he learns of his unique ability to control Daemons, and that there are people who want to use his power. And when the people he meets can't be trusted, how will Yuru save the world?
Hiromu Arakawa is an intense writer that is often praised for her intricate and masterful world building. With her stylistic form of writing, expect Yuru to encounter unique and well-crafted characters, as well as morally grey individuals that keep us on our toes. If you are a fan of the world building within Fullmetal Alchemist, and you enjoy a dark story, fantasy, and action, then get excited for Daemons of the Shadow Realm.
Marriagetoxin
Marriagetoxin is a flavour of anime that will seemingly appeal to many different kinds of anime watchers. A series in which fans relate its likeness akin to series such as Sakamoto Days and Spy x Family, both of which have gained much popularity in recent years. Marriagetoxin is the most notable creative work by the author Joumyaku, with many users online praising the series for its heartiness, profound storytelling, well written characters, and action. Marriagetoxin is more than a romantic comedy, it encompasses a wide range of themes and genres, making it a diverse yet incredibly well balance series.
Marriagetoxin follows the story of Hikaru Gero, a highly skilled assassin who specialises in poisons. The Gero Family head determined that an heir must be born to preserve the bloodline. To prevent his sister being forced into marriage, Hikaru Gero is pushed to seek a hand in marriage. However while highly capable in his line of work, he is a socially awkward and inept individual in the realm of romance. Despite this, Gero is highly determined, enlisting the help of marriage swindler Mei Kinosaki. With Kinosaki's help, it just might be possible that Hikaru Gero prevails in love and romance.
Whether you are an action junkie, hopeless romantic, or searching for something that'll make you laugh, Marriagetoxin ticks every box. Beautiful artwork? yes! Waifus? Of course! Badass assassin torching a car in half, mid-somersault? Definitely! Marriagetoxin is a series that includes a little something for everybody, and is a series I'll be picking up this spring season.
Eren the Southpaw
Finally, the series in which I personally have my eyes on the most is Eren the Southpaw. The story follows to classmates whose lives look very different. Koichi Asakura, a designer for an ad agency, despite his perseverance and hard work, he receives no recognition for his efforts. Eren Yamagishi on the other hand, while she is a famously talented painter, she lives a tortured and lonely life. The emotional tone of the series empathises with ordinariness in a world where only exceptional talent is valued. Heavily influenced by the reality of life, the author Kappi created Eren the Southpaw drawing influence from his own experiences in the Japanese ad-agency industry.
If it is one thing you should know about me, I love series that have emotional depth. It is comforting stepping away from the high-octane, dopamine inducing action series every once and a while to experience something raw, emotional, and thought-provoking. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and the Rascal Does not Dream series, are some of the anime of recent years with emotional depth that I absolutely adore. I am curious to see how Kappi explores the theme 'hard work vs genius,' and the conflicts and experiences associated with both sides of the story. It is my hopes for Eren the Southpaw to produce a similarly vulnerable and introspective experience.
If you are like me and enjoy slower, deeper, and introspective stories, follow along with me and pick up Eren the Southpaw this Spring 2026.
The End.
Thank you all for reading. I hope that by reading this blog post, you discovered a series that piqued your curiosity. Follow along for any updates about the aforementioned series, as we get deeper into the spring season of anime.
See you next time,
Cupidsama.
